My paper mache pieces lean toward humor, whimsy and portraying our local animal neighbors.
I start with an armature of chicken wire, Styrofoam or cardboard boxes and tubes. Each piece is layered with newspaper, tissue paper and white glue. After several coats of paint and some attention to the face and eyes, they seem to take on a life of their own, and I’m ready to let them go.
I’ve always been a watercolor painter. I love the transparent quality of the paint and delicate balance of layers of color and the light that comes through from the white paper. I’ve gone from working plein air using watercolors to record the scene to using torn and cut papers to represent landscape forms and the effect of light. I find collage to be creatively freeing and a great way to use old watercolor paintings.
I’m a lifelong self-taught artist. As a child in Savannah, Georgia, I was always drawing and painting and was influenced by local landscape painters. I’ve been fortunate to live and be inspired by the beautiful coastal areas of Georgia and South Carolina, and since 1990, our wonderful Southern Appalachian Mountains.
